The complete persepolis online book5/19/2023 ![]() I finished the book yesterday, and while it was a fairly enjoyable read, I didn’t feel any especial frisson upon finishing it, or sadness that I was done. ![]() Despite its generally pretty favorable reviews, this book always struck me as getting its attention more from the fact of it being a graphic novel than from any real intrinsic quality.Īnd I think, largely, that I was right. Not to mention that I have to HEAR ABOUT this thing constantly, what with the movie coming out, media coverage, etc., so I guess I got worn down. Originally published in France by L’Association, then translated and published here in two volumes several years ago, this new complete edition was too cool-looking for me to pass up buying. ![]() I’m having a hard time putting my thoughts together on this book. ![]()

Goliath westerfeld novel5/18/2023 ![]() ![]() Gradually the countless fingers of light began to align, all of them pointed to the left. The officer at the telegraph still tapped away, the buttons on his coat alight with tiny sparks. The antennae on Klopp’s black box had erupted, sending shoots of lightning climbing up them, only to sputter out in the air. The glass tubes were filled with rainbows of color, the metal spheres covered with a thousand needles of electricity. ![]() “All the other instruments had come to life, filling the theater with light. A Feast of Vultures by Josy Joseph5/18/2023 ![]() ![]() The chapter on defence middlemen contains interesting and unknown details. It is these fixers who eventually get co-opted into political parties, like the Congress or the Bharatiya Janata Party. It is an eye-opening development in Indian democracy: that its grass roots no longer comprise party workers who are traditional go-betweens between constituents and the levers of power. Mr Fix-it is an unapologetic and vital cog in the food chain: He helps the poor get things done, and the influential get popular support. He travels to an urban village outside Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh to meet “Mr Fix-it Down the Street". ![]() Joseph judiciously mixes field reporting and investigative research: No wonder he is an award-winning journalist. ![]()

It has not affected my honest review.Ĭontent Warnings: racism, Islamophobia, biphobia, parental abandonment, toxic friendship. Thanks to Hodder Children’s Group for the eARC of this book. Witch king martha5/18/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I found myself completely rapt by the main characters particularly Kai and Zaide. ![]() Once or twice I found myself confused as to whether I was reading about now or then.Ī lot happens and it is a very difficult book to put down at all. Each past chapter cleverly feeds information to the reader which is needed to really understand the events of the present time. The book is written with alternate sections of the past and the present. This works for both sides as the demons expand their way of life, and the family members do not die but do acquire super skills. Kai has been part of a scheme whereby demons are brought up above to inhabit the bodies of members of high families. This author has a real talent for writing charismatic main characters (Murderbot comes to mind immediately) and she has done it again with Kai, a demon from the Underworld. I was lucky enough to be able to read an advance copy of this book which is a new epic fantasy from Martha Wells. ![]() |
